New Mexico Concealed Handgun Firearms Certification Course

BRING ALL EQUIPMENT WITH YOU THE FIRST DAY OF THE COURSE, but no firearms in the classroom until we ask for them.

NO LIVE AMMUNITION IN CLASSROOM AT ANY TIME !

REQUIRED COURSE EQUIPMENT

Handguns and Certification - You will be required by New Mexico regulations to fire 15 rounds from 3 yards and 10 rounds from 7 yards with the largest caliber and category you want to legally carry concealed. After qualifying, you may carry ANY semi-auto handgun of smaller caliber.

EXAMPLES; qualification with a semi-auto pistol in 45 ACP caliber, you may carry ANY semi-auto pistol of a smaller caliber than 45 ACP (40 S&W, 9mm, .380 ACP etc.). Similarly, if you qualify with a revolver in 357 magnum caliber you may carry ANY revolver of a smaller caliber, 38 Special, 32 M, 22LR.

Caliber Minimum - Course standards require that you qualify with a handgun of at least .380 ACP or 38 Special caliber.  You may carry concealed firearms of smaller calibers, but you MUST qualify with at least .380ACP or 38 Special.

Strong side holster - Although some of you prefer other concealed carry holster positions, you will ONLY be allowed on the firing line with a STRONG SIDE holster.  The “strong side” is the master hand side of your body. You may bring your preferred concealed carry holster to the course for evaluation and discussion, but live fire shooting will only be done from a strong side holster with either a reliable friction tensioning system or some other form of retention device like a thumb strap. Don’t bring a holster that will allow your firearm to FALL OUT during the range exercises.  Wear pants with belt loops and a STURDY belt.

Spare magazine for semi-autos or speed loader for revolvers

You will need a minimum of one spare magazine for each semi-auto pistol and/or one spare speed loader (or speed strip) for each revolver.  Make sure the speed loader is designed for your specific revolver.  A belt carrier or pouch for your speed loader or magazine is recommended but not required.

Ammunition

Training Ammunition

Bring at least 150 rounds of factory loaded ammunition for your PRIMARY carry handgun only; which will be used for training purposes.  This ammunition may be Full Metal Jacketed, hardball or any other factory-loaded ammunition.  YOU MAY NOT USE hand-loaded ammunition for any part of this course!  WHY?---Because it creates UNNECESSARY LIABILITY exposure for both you and your INSTRUCTORS!

Ammunition purchased at Dona Ana Munitions (D.A.M.) here in Las Cruces is approved for use in our courses.

  Qualification Ammunition

In addition, you will need AT LEAST 25 rounds of full power ammunition for the handguns with which you intend to qualify.  While twenty-five (25) rounds of ammunition for each handgun is the minimum required, we recommend you bring 30 rounds for each.  

Eye and Hearing Protection

Every participant in the course will be required to wear EYE and HEARING protection during ALL FIRING range activities.  Eyewear should have ANSI impact approved polycarbonate lenses. 

Baseball Type Hat

A hat with a bill on it will keep hot brass from landing between your shooting glasses and your face or in your eye.  MUST wear while on the firing line.

       Recommended Equipment 

Disassembly Tools & Manufacturer’s Manual

Bring any tools, which are routinely necessary to disassemble your pistol for cleaning.  This includes any screwdrivers, bushing wrench etc..  Also, bring the manual that came with your firearm if you have one. This is especially important if you do not know how to disassemble your firearm.

Recommended  equipment to safely participate in firing range activities.

Knee pads. 

The firing range surface is very rough and we still sometimes find glass mixed with the rocks and other debris on the range.  You may want to fire from the kneeling position in some of the training drills and you will be kneeling to recover magazines, etc. You decide!  Be safe!

Flashlight

If time permits, we will be covering some of the material from our “advanced” low light shooting course.  The best flashlights for the concealed carry environment are the small 2 or 3 battery, lithium cell  flashlights with a tail piece on/off switch. 

70% of self-defense shootings occur in LOW LIGHT, you should take advantage of the opportunity to practice some of the range drills with a flashlight.

DO NOT BRING LIVE AMMUNITION INTO THE CLASSROOM!

Our other courses will require a different equipment set.
